Propeller basics

Diameter

This is the size of the circle drawn by the blades; it is given in inches and corresponds to the first digit.

Ex: 13.5 x 17 -> 13.5 corresponds to the diameter

! The larger the diameter (i.e. the greater the surface area of the blades), the more powerful your motor needs to be to accelerate.

Number of blades

A propeller may contain 3 or 4 blades. A 3-blade propeller will deliver better performance at higher speeds, while a 4-blade propeller will offer greater thrust and more comfort at cruising speed.

The step

This is the theoretical distance covered by the propeller during a complete revolution. It is also given in inches and corresponds to the second digit.

An increase in pitch by 2″ would result in a drop in engine speed of 300 to 400 rpm, and vice versa for a decrease in pitch.

Over-revving the engine must be avoided, while allowing the engine to reach the speed at which maximum power is delivered.

HR and LH

This is the direction of rotation of the propeller.

RH (Right Hand) = right-turning propeller and LH (Left Hand) = left-turning propeller.
